QUEZON CITY, Apr. 20 (PIA) — Barangay officials and workers are eligible to receive cash subsidy from the government’s Social Amelioration Program (SAP). This was confirmed in a letter dated April 17 by the DSWD Sec. Rolando Bautista to all its regional directors.

The letter was issued in response to the appeal made by Marinduque Governor Presbitero Velasco Jr., as Chairman of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), and whose appeal was aired live during the nationwide program Network Briefing over Radyo Pilipinas last week.

The appeal of Governor Velasco was referred for guidance to the Deptartment of Interior and Local Government (DILG) which recommended the inclusion of the barangay workers as target beneficiaries of the SAP.

In DILG’s response to DSWD through Undersecretary Jonathan E. Malaya, Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Tanods, and Barangay Day Care Workers, by nature of their appointment, are not disqualified as target beneficiaries under the SAP. The letter further notes that the barangay workers undergo proper screening to determine if they fall under the vulnerable and disadvantaged sectors.

The execution of this is awaiting the issuance of the implementing rules and guidelines to be issued by the DSWD. (VSM/PIA-Mimaropa)
