City Agri urges Iligan residents to grow own ‘survival garden’ amid ECQ

April 7, 2020 Uncategorized

ILIGAN CITY, Apr. 7 (PIA) — The Iligan City Agriculture Office (ICAO) is encouraging residents of Iligan to grow their own survival garden while the city is under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Currently, the ICAO is distributing repacked vegetable seeds to individuals and barangays here as part of the emergency response to the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) menace.

Jose Desiderio Oyo-a, officer-in-charge of the ICAO, said the program dubbed “COVID-19 Survival Garden” aims to encourage every household to grow their survival garden in their backyards and have a sustainable supply of vegetables while an ECQ is being implemented in the city.

“While the quarantine is ongoing, we are giving away seeds to help the families and communities to be prepared in case of a food supply shortage due to the impact of the ECQ,” he further said.

Oyo-a added that having some vegetable plants in the backyard could help families in these trying times.

According to Oyo-a, the seeds are distributed for free and delivered to the puroks or barangays in observance of the physical distancing measures.

Among the seeds being distributed include pechay, okra, kangkong, bell pepper, batong, squash, patola, and eggplant.

As of press time, the ICAO has distributed some 3,152 sets of assorted vegetable seeds in different urban households.

Those interested to obtain free assorted vegetable seeds may contact the ICAO on telephone number 221-4466 or mobile number 09350340477. (APB/PIA ICIC)
