Lanao del Sur guv asks Maranaos to perform Taraweeh prayers at home

April 17, 2020 Uncategorized

MARAWI CITY, Apr. 16 (PIA) — Provincial Governor Mamintal A. Adiong Jr. asked the people of Lanao del Sur to perform ‘taraweeh’ prayers at their homes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Taraweeh is performed by Muslims at night during the holy month of Ramadhan which will tentatively start on April 24 depending on the sighting of the moon.

“We are prohibiting the conduct of prayers in mosques to avoid mass gathering,” Adiong said in Maranao dialect in a video posted in the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur Facebook page.

The conduct of Friday prayers and other congregational prayers at the mosque has been suspended across the province following the implementation of enhanced community quarantine. However, mosques are still allowed to continue the Adhan or the ritual call to prayer

Adiong said the temporary suspension is a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of the highly contagious and deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the area.

“We are trying our best to combat COVID-19 and we need your cooperation. Once we beat this virus, we can resume the holding of prayers at mosques,” he added. (APB/PIA ICIC)
