Leyte SP supports call to pass ordinance vs discrimination, harassment of frontline workers

April 13, 2020 Uncategorized

TACLOBAN CITY, Apr. 13 (PIA) — The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Leyte is set to enact after the Holy Week, an ordinance versus discrimination and harassment of COVID-19 frontline workers.

Vice Governor Carlo Loreto intimated this during the Eastern Visayas Virtual Presser hosted by DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya before the Holy Week.

SP Leyte fully supports the DILG call, the Leyte Vice Governor said.

This was Loreto’s response to the reiteration by Usec. Malaya on the DILG directive urging  all local government units (LGUs) nationwide to pass and enforce anti-discrimination and anti-harassment ordinances to protect frontline workers fighting against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

The actual provisions of the ordinance will depend on the deliberations of the provincial legislators when the proposed ordinance is presented, Loreto said.

The DILG call was issued following reports of discrimination against frontline workers, to include health professionals, police, military, essential services personnel, and government and non-government social workers.

The IATF-MEID said that acts of discrimination, such as, but not limited to, coercion, libel, slander, physical injuries, and the dishonor of contractual obligations such as contracts of lease or employment shall be dealt with criminally, civilly and/or administratively. (opt/PIA-8)
