President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday appealed for collaboration and generosity in helping out the most vulnerable sectors of society hit by the COVID-19 crisis. (PIA NCR) CALOOCAN CITY, March 31 (PIA) — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on late Monday night unveiled a P200-billion social protection program for low-income families affected by the coronavirus disease or COVID-19 pandemic. “The government is now launching the largest and widest social protection program in our country’s history to make up for the loss in the economic opportunities due to quarantine measures in place. We have allotted P200B for low-income households affected by the current crisis,” Duterte said in his televised speech over PTV Channel 4 days after Congress granted him additional powers to address the COVID-19 crisis. Under the aid plan, reportedly the biggest social amelioration program in the country, beneficiary households will receive two-month worth of emergency financial assistance based on prevailing regional minimum pay rates. “Sila ang nasa informal sector and those with no work, no pay. Beneficiary households will receive emergency support for their two months based on the regional minimum wage,” the President said. “However, I still count on everyone to also look out after their fellowmen, their countrymen. To those who have more in life, I implore you to take in the cause of taking care of the less fortunate and keeping the society intact. They have also contributed in the prosperity in one way or the other. Let us support them in this crisis,” he added. The President also appealed for cooperation and kindness in supporting the vulnerable sectors of society. “Let it be said that in the hour of our country’s greatest need, we all look out for and help each other. Buksan natin ang ating puso sa nangangailangan. I also appeal to the private sector to contribute in any way you can in dealing with this national emergency. We implore employers to do their part in protecting the welfare of the millions of Filipino households who belong in the formal sector,” he added. He meanwhile, graciously thanked those who extended help anonymously. “For those who have silently helped, away from the cameras, maraming salamat po. The emergency subsidy assistance program is expected to give an estimated 18-million poor and marginalized households the capacity to purchase basic food and essential items during the community quarantine, as these are the ones most affected by this crisis.
