Tanauan City LGU distributes 1,393 locally-produced milk packs

April 11, 2020 Uncategorized

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, April 11 (PIA) –The Tanauan City government has added milk in the food packs it distributed recently in response to the National Dairy Administration’s (NDA) call to include locally-produced milk in the food packs it hands out to families affected by the Luzonwide enhanced community quarantine.

Through the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD), the city government handed out 1,393 milk packs to senior citizens and fontliners with each pack containing 1 liter of pasteurized milk.

The milk packs, purchased from DH Magpantay Dairy Farm in the city was processed by the Katipunan ng Kooperatibang Maggagatas, Inc. (KKMI) in Calauan, Laguna.

NDA Administrator Marilyn B. Mabale in a letter to the different local government units (LGUS) has encouraged LGUs to include locally-produced milk in the food packs it distribute to residents.

“Fresh milk is an important component in every diet and a major source of energy, protein, and calcium essential for the maintenance of a healthy body,” Mabale explained.

“In times of emergencies, where there is a high probability of limited food supply, it is important to have nutrient-dense commodities like milk to combat possible acute or chronic energy deficiency among the population,” she added.

Mabale recommended the inclusion of locally-produced milk in the food rations not only to add nutritional value to the food packs but to also help the local dairy farmers market their milk even during the quarantine period.

The NDA has committed to provide assistance by facilitating the negotiation between the LGUs and the dairy farmers who will supply the milk.

Several NDA partners have already started distributing free milk and milk products to frontline workers in their areas who continuously perform duties amid the COVID-19 crisis.

These are: Malungon DAIRY Farmers Cooperative, Moolk Creamery Corp, Cagayan State University-Piat Campus, Mountain High Dairy Cooperative, Alaminos Milk Star Goat’s Milk, and ACDI Multipurpose Cooperative. (CPGonzaga with report from DA-NDA FB Page)
